I NOTICE MYSELF ADAPTING DEPENDING ON WHO IS PRESENT
Adapting to different environments is human. Remaining connected to our authentic selves while doing so is the deeper challenge.
People often think authenticity means showing up exactly the same way everywhere.
Yet human beings naturally adapt.
We adjust our language.
Our energy.
Our confidence.
Our humor.
We notice who is present.
We consider what is expected.
We respond to relationships, culture, power dynamics, and context.
And without necessarily intending to, different parts of us begin appearing in different rooms.
Sometimes these adaptations help us connect.
To collaborate.
To belong.
To contribute.
To feel safe enough to participate more fully.
Adaptation itself is not necessarily evidence that we are disconnected from ourselves.
It may simply be evidence that we are human.
Yet over time, continually shifting how we think, speak, or behave can become difficult to notice.
We may begin wondering which version of ourselves feels most familiar.
Whether some parts of us are invited forward more often than others.
Or whether certain environments quietly ask us to leave meaningful pieces of ourselves behind.
We begin to develop an Adaptive Persona — the many ways we move between spaces and identities throughout our workdays.
Stay curious about these adjustments.
Not to eliminate adaptation.
Not to become the same person in every room.
But perhaps to better understand the ways we have learned to navigate different environments.
And to ask whether those adjustments still allow us to remain connected to the person beneath them.
Different parts of us may show up in different rooms.
The deeper question may be whether we still feel at home within ourselves as we move between them..
